Comparison of the Electrochemical Response of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), Glassy Carbon, and Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) in Near-Neutral Aqueous Chloride Media

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP), being conductive, are capable of supporting cathodic oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and thus promote galvanic corrosion when coupled to many metallic materials. Hence, understanding processes at carbon surfaces is critical developing new strategies for the protection multi-material assemblies. In present work, electrochemical responses CFRP, glassy carbon, HOPG (Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite) have been evaluated in a quiescent 50 mM NaCl solution, their respective activities towards ORR ranked. Employing averages specific charges (CFRP, 129.52 mC cm−2; 89.95 HOPG, 60.77 cm−2) passed during 1 h polarization each 3 −1000 mVSCE test media as ranking criterion, propensities GC, HOPG) support that can lead anodic metal dissolution on coupling materials ranked thusly; CFRP > GC HOPG. This consistent with trend capacitance values obtained this work: (19.5 34.5 μF cm−2), (13.6 85.5 (1.4 1.8 cm−2). A comparison data potentials relevant metals indicated these potential(s) surface most electrochemically active studied surfaces. These results could provide valuable insights plausible designing fiber composites reduced activity toward applications or enhanced energy applications.
